Prof. John Richards
President - International Society for Digital Earth
John has been engaged in research in remote sensing.
John is President of the International Society for Digital Earth. He is a graduate of the University of New South Wales in Electrical Engineering (BE Hons 1 and PhD), and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, NY.
Over many years John has been engaged in research in remote sensing, most particularly in image analysis and imaging radar; he was foundation Director of the Centre for Remote Sensing at the University of New south Wales in the 1980s. He has held senior management positions at the University of New South Wales and the Australian National University.
John is an Emeritus Professor of both the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales and is a Visiting Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, China.
He received the Australian Centenary of Federation Medal and, in 2009, was made a Member in the Order of Australia for service to electrical engineering, professional associations and space science.
